Carey Moon is a ceramicist and painter. She did a Fine Art degree at Leeds Polytechnic then Art Teacher Training at Goldsmiths. After many years in London, Carey worked in her family’s pottery and gallery business for 10 years before setting up her own studio in Warwick in 2014.
Working mainly in porcelain, Carey throws bowls and a variety of other vessels on a potter’s wheel before decorating them with black and coloured clay slips. Her hand-painted designs are inspired by nature. Carey particularly likes bowls as their shape allows her the artistic freedom to incorporate poetry or text with great effect into her work. These pieces are initially ‘bisque’ fired to 1000⁰C, then dipped in transparent glaze and fired a second time to 1230⁰C. More recently Carey has been experimenting with earthenware clay as a more eco-friendly approach to her practice. As well exhibiting work across the UK, Carey runs art sessions for senior citizens in care home settings, stroke support clubs and at ‘memory cafés’. She occasionally runs workshops for small groups in her own studio. |
